What is Instagram TV?

IGTV is a new Instagram feature for sharing video. It is similar to Instagram Stories, the only difference is you can upload videos about an hour and they won’t disappear after 24 hours like Instagram stories.

Instagram TV is accessible either from the standard Instagram app, or from the separate IGTV app. On the original Instagram app, you’ll see it as a TV icon in the top right, and it will be highlighted if there is new content for you.

Every IGTV account links to a corresponding Instagram account. The relationship between IGTV and Instagram is a lot like Facebook and FB Messenger. You’ve got two separate apps on your phone, but they both work together to make up that a complete package.

Like good ol’ fashioned television, IGTV has channels, which brands use however they like. You could create hour-long episodes of a long-term series, or use Instagram TV as an extension of your standard Instagram profile. Here are a few facts to keep in consideration:

  • Videos are vertical and full screen.
  • The full 60-minute recording time is only available to verified or large accounts.
  • IGTV videos play both in the IGTV app and Instagram app.
  • Swipe up call-to-actions are available in videos.
  • No ad options are available yet, but Instagram may be working on this.

If you’re running a blog alongside social media, then why not get them working in tandem.

You can make it easy for blog visitors to connect with you on social media by embedding a social media post in your blog post.

4. Run a poll

People can’t resist answering questions on social media. So running a Poll is almost guaranteed to generate interest and engagement on each network.

There are three social media platform for Run Poll:

  1. Instagram:
    Instagram Stories has two options – Poll Stickers and Emoji Slider Polls.
  2. Facebook:
    On Facebook, you can create a poll that asks a question and lets people choose one of two options.
  3. Twitter:
    Twitter lets you add up to four options to a poll, but you can’t include photos. The minimum amount of time for a poll is 5 minutes, and the maximum is 7 days.

Running an AMA (Ask Me Anything) session via Live Video is an excellent way of interacting with your followers.

The key to making them successful is to ensure you tell people you’re going to run one so they can make a note or sign up for notifications. If you run a live session on a whim, you could end up being lonely.

The best options for live video AMA’s are Facebook Live and Instagram Live. Both allow broadcasts up to one hour long.

6. Use a UTM link for your bio and campaigns

If you create a link that includes UTM values, you can track how effective each link is in Google Analytics.

Before you host a giveaway, it’s important to decide what you want to achieve. Short term, you might get likes, comments, shares and new followers. But you’ll need a strategy in place to keep that interaction going in the long-term.

Hashtags started life on Twitter, but now you’ll see them on InstagramFacebook, and LinkedIn. Using the same hashtag makes it easier for your audience to remember your campaign as they move between networks, and consistency helps to build a strong brand.

9. State a controversial fact, then ask a question

A bit of controversy never hurt anyone, did it? Well, it seems to work for Mr. Trump anyway!

The idea here is to spark a conversation. You don’t need to involve politics or anything of a sensitive nature. Just pick a topic related to your brand that you think will stoke opinions.

10. Get people in your company to take a video of their day-to-day – or host a takeover

Social media takeovers have proved to be successful for both hosts and guests. Consider it a Win-Win partnership:

The host gets someone new to freshen up their content, while the guest has the chance to reach a new audience.

Popular takeover formats include:

  • Broadcast a live video on Instagram or Facebook.
  • Share photos, GIFs, and videos in the News Feed.
  • Update your Stories on Instagram and Facebook.

Three types of external guest you can invite are:

  • Influencers – raising brand awareness and boosting engagement.
  • Customers – delivering user-generated content and demonstrating social proof.
  • Community members – building relationships and showcasing talent.
